remnant is a weekly letter and a growing directory of abandoned and affordable properties around the world, made by Malia Márquez and Wally Rudolph, two writers in Los Angeles. It’s for anyone curious about a different life somewhere else, whether that stays a late-night daydream or turns into a move.
What we are
The directory gathers listings from places where communities are working to bring people back, through incentive programs, abandoned houses, and properties priced to sell. The country guides collect the incentive programs, the buying process, visas, taxes, and real costs in one place, with every claim linked to its source. We aren’t lawyers, accountants, or a brokerage, and nothing here is legal, tax, or immigration advice.
Membership
A free account includes the directory, saved searches, and the weekly letter. remnant member, at $6 a month, adds source links, the full country guides, and the letter archive.
How listings get here
We add new listings every week, and every card links back to its original source. Houses sell and prices change, so check the original listing before you get attached to one.
Prices
Prices are shown in the local currency, with an approximate US dollar conversion at a single exchange rate, refreshed weekly.
Corrections
If you spot something wrong in a listing, a guide, or an issue, tell us through the contact page and we’ll fix it. When we correct something after it publishes, we say so.
How we treat your data
We never sell, rent, or share reader data. No third-party tracking pixels, no cross-site tracking. Our analytics are privacy-first and collect no personal data. Reader data is deleted within 30 days of cancellation, and you can see exactly what we hold on you, on demand.
How we use AI
We’re writers and artists, and our personal work is made without AI. remnant is different. We use AI as an editorial tool to help gather and organize listings and to synthesize large amounts of research, and the ideas, reporting, editing, and voice are ours.
